English Language Arts (ELA) Theme Units
These units serve as our whole group comprehension focus throughout the school year. Most of the stories that are read during this unit are read aloud. Students are expected to show their understanding of the stories and the unit through collaborative discussions, as well as through group and individual writing activities. Themes from these units are also incorporated into targeted instruction when appropriate through leveled books. Click the image to learn more about the unit.

Overview of Unit:
Within this unit on communities, students will develop a general understanding of a community as a group of living things (insects, animals, and humans) that depend on the members of the community for food, shelter, and safety. Students will read about and compare ant and bee communities. Advancing to animal communities, students will compare prairie dog communities as they are represented in literature and in informational text. Finally, students will explore human communities – their own and those of fictional characters before learning the characteristics of communities developed by people. Students will engage in close reading and rereading of complex text to engage in collaborative discussion of text-dependent questions.
Students will engage in routine narrative, informative, and opinion writing throughout the unit. Through shared, guided, and independent writing, students will learn to construct a paragraph with key details about a topic. Students will ultimately apply their writing skills to the creation of a page for a class book about our communities.

Overview of Unit
In this unit, students will read a variety of texts (fiction and nonfiction) and view videos that focus on creative thinkers and problem solvers. Creative thinking can be described as inventive, original and “out of the box”. The thinking typically evolves to solve a problem and/or make life’s tasks easier.
This unit is designed to allow for reading about fictional characters and historical fiction figures who have been motivated to create, invent, design or innovate ideas that change the way we live today. Science text (Seeds of Science Roots of Reading) have been embedded to support reading standards. Text will be reread within science class for a different purpose.
