Animals of Long Ago
Life Cycles
- Students will examine the life cycle of a pumpkin, plants, humans, butterflies, ants and frogs.
Help Save the Earth
- This unit complements our CHESPAX field trip. During this unit students will learn about renewable and nonrenewable resources, as well as conserving resources. Students will learn what it means to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Energy and Electricity
- During this unit students will learn how humans, plants and animals get and use energy. Students will also complete a hands on activities to increase their understanding of potential and kinetic energy. Other topics that will be discussed during this unit include natural energy sources, electricity sources and changing energy into sound/heat/light and static energy. We will end the unit by learning how we can save energy.

Social Studies
Respectful, Responsible and Ready to Learn
- These three character traits are an integral part of our classroom, as well as MHES. We will spend time learning what each trait looks like in class, around the school, at recess and at home. Picture books, online materials and songs are being used to reinforce being respectful, responsible and ready to learn.
Continents and Oceans
- By the end of this unit, students should be able to name and locate the continents and oceans using a blank map.
Cultures
- A person's culture can be seen by examining what they eat and wear, how they communicate, what their homes look like, what holidays are celebrated, a person's religion and traditions. During our unit on culture, students will asked to celebrate the similarities and respect the difference between their culture and the many other cultures there are in the world.
National Symbols
- After learning what national symbols are, students will research five national symbols. These symbols include the White House, Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty, Bald eagle and American flag.
Now and Then
- During this unit, students will examine the evolution of technology, televisions and transportation. Students will be asked to compare their school experience to Ruby Peterson, a lady who was 92 years old when the video was created. To teach the students about life in the late 1800s, the Pony Express will be examined using a Weekly Reader article. We will also compare different aspects of life in the 1700's to today using the Liberty's Kids website.
