Accelerated Reader
GENERAL INFORMATION
This supplemental program has your child reading at his or her independent reading level. It is important that children read at their reading levels to build fluency and comprehension. Your child will be taking quizzes on the books that they read in the classroom or checked out from the library at their AR level. These quizzes check how well they understand what they read, earning them points as they pass each comprehension quiz. As a reminder, students should only test on books in their current ZPD range.

ZPD DEFINITION
Each student is assigned a Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). The ZPD is tested at the beginning of each month. This is found on your child’s STAR Reading report. The ZPD is a set of numbers showing the lowest reading level and the highest reading level appropriate for each student. Students should choose books on or in between these numbers to help make sure they are reading books that are not too easy or too difficult. For example, a student with a ZPD 2.1 – 3.1 should choose books that are for a student who is reading at a 2nd grade, 1st month to 3rd grade, 1st month. The average reading level for this would be somewhere in between those two numbers. |
AR GOALS
The goals are the minimum number of AR points each student should get. The goals are set each month. Students get points by successfully passing tests. Each student’s goal is based on his or her reading level. Students should strive to take one to two tests per week, depending on their reading level.
